Biography of Martyr Amirhossein Faghahi | Introduction

Seyed Amirhossein Faghahi, one of Iran’s prominent scientific elites and nuclear engineers, was born on September 11, 1978 (20 Shahrivar 1357) in Shiraz. He served as the Deputy of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, a Full Professor at Shahid Beheshti University, a distinguished researcher, and a renowned Iranian nuclear engineer. He was a tenured professor (base 16) in the Faculty of Nuclear Engineering and a member of the editorial boards of scientific journals at Shahid Beheshti University. He played a pivotal role in research, education, cancer treatment using radiopharmaceuticals, and the development of nuclear power plants for electricity generation.

Dr. Faghahi was martyred on Friday, June 13, 2025 (23 Khordad 1404), following an airstrike by Israel on his residence in Tehran, which marked the beginning of a twelve-day conflict with Iran. This attack also claimed the lives of five nuclear scientists and several senior military commanders. His death had widespread impact in Iranian media and the scientific community, being recognized as part of Israel’s targeted operations against Iran’s nuclear scientists.

His mother said in an interview while preparing for the burial ceremony:
“I am grateful that my son found his ultimate wish in such a sacred path. Though his absence is a heavy loss, I firmly believe he achieved the happiness and destiny I prayed for him. Our enemies may take their bodies, but their thoughts, honesty, and work will remain rooted in Iran. I hope his students not only continue his path but surpass him.”

Her words reflect the profound faith and maternal pride of a parent whose child dedicated his life to science, education, and the national progress of Iran.

Education

Amirhossein Faghahi completed his primary and secondary education in Shiraz and then moved to Urmia University to study Physics (Nuclear Engineering track). He earned his Bachelor’s degree in 2000 (1379), then pursued Master’s studies in Nuclear Engineering (Energy specialization) at Amirkabir University of Technology, graduating in 2003 (1382). In 2008 (1387), he completed his PhD in Nuclear Engineering (Energy specialization) at Amirkabir University.

In the Iranian academic system, a “base” indicates academic rank and service years. Full Professor, base 16 means Dr. Faghahi had 16 years of effective service, making him one of the most senior and accomplished professors in the country. He was a key figure in Iran’s nuclear scientific community, actively participating in national and international research projects, including collaborations with CERN.

Career and Responsibilities

Dr. Faghahi was appointed as special advisor to the head of the Atomic Energy Organization by Mohammad Eslami. From 2008, he joined the Faculty of Nuclear Engineering at Shahid Beheshti University, reaching Full Professor, base 16 in 2016 (1395). He led the Nuclear Science and Technology Research Institute, was a student of Martyrs Ahmadi-Roshan and Shahriari, and held key roles in various scientific, research, and academic committees.

He supervised 22 PhD theses, 145 Master’s theses, published 158 international papers, 82 national papers, 38 conference papers, and authored 7 books. He also completed 10 external research contracts and registered 5 scientific innovations.
